WILLIAM 💛 ANNE

Leaving Wales, the next stop on our tour of Great Britain was the English town of Stratford-on-Avon, best known as the birthplace of William Shakespeare and as the childhood home of his wife Anne Hathaway. We visited both. Here are some of my photos.

First, a pleasing statue of Shakespeare on the side of Stratford's city hall.

Anne Hathaway's "cottage" is actually a 12-room home in Shottery, a village about a mile outside of Stratford.

The interior has been restored and decorated presumably as it was in the seventeenth century.

The grounds around the home are beautiful and include this unusual sculpture/bench.

The photo below of a variety of iris turned out nicely, except that once again one of my flowers pictures got photo-bombed by an insect.

Yes, the gardens included artichokes.  I liked this one for its variety of colors.

Shakespeare's birthplace was humbler but interesting.

The following is an unusual detail of what might be considered period wallpaper.  The figure depicted seems a bit androgynous.

The photo below is of a portion of a couple of glass doors that close inspection reveals are covered by names/graffiti/etc. of tourists who wrote on the glass, a practice that was permitted until sometime in the 19th century.

It appears that I have a thing for the colors of poppies.

John.
