STONEHENGE

On the 12th day of our tour of Great Britain, we traveled from Bath to London via Stonehenge and Windsor Castle.  We arrived at Stonehenge early in the day, which was both good and, I suppose, not so good.  It was good in that we arrived just after it opened and so beat most of the crowds.  Unfortunately, even though it was sunny, for purposes of photography the light was relatively "flat" and did not offer the sorts of photo opportunities that might have been available close to either sunrise or sunset.  It was what it was and we were thankful that the weather was just about as good at it gets.

Next to the visitor center were recreations of what might have been structures that the ancients used during the period(s) that the structure was being constructed.

Visitors could enter the huts which with the stick-built door closed provided an interesting photo opportunity, especially when one of our group appeared at the window in the door.

Visitors are no longer allowed to walk among the monoliths, unfortunately.  Instead, we were kept outside of ropes extending around the structure at a distance of perhaps 50 yards.  So the best I could do was to walk around the structure taking pictures from time to time.  Here are a couple of those.

The so-called heel stone, separated at a distance from the main cluster of stones, was used to identify the summer and winter solstices, as shown on by the markings on the ground.

John.
