ISTANBUL: PART 3

The centerpiece for the third full day of the tour of Istanbul was the Topkapi Palace.  The palace was built by Sultan Mehmet II, after he conquered Constantinople in 1453.  It was completed in 1478 CE.  For 400 years it served as the fortress/seat of government for the Ottomans.  Many superlatives could be applied to the palace, including size, opulence, and architecture.  Here are some of the photos that I took.

Hand painted ceiling supports from exterior "porch."

Unusual ceiling details,

Windows and doors (note tile surrounds):

Exquisite tile work is common throughout the palace, including the interiors of domes.

The sultan's reception room.  A little cluttered for my tastes, but, hey.

Interesting baluster detail.

Passageway.
